Inspired by the Japanese ‘Wabi-Sabi,’ this piece channels fragmentary imperfection. I like to think of Wabi-Sabi as seeing the beauty in the imperfect. Wabi can translate to the appreciation of a serene life and Sabi: the delightful contemplation of what is old and worn.
I kept these Japanese principles in mind as I let this piece create itself using many materials that I already owned. I allowed error and incompleteness and roughness while maintaining a calm and minimalist design- all concepts that I am striving for as an artist. I named this piece “STILL” to remind us to take moments to be still and recognize the beauty that is everywhere around us.
I gathered inspiration from many sources including shadows, nature and stories from close friends. The colors are meant to mirror a glass of wine that has spilled on a white washed wood. Materials include linen, plaster and paint on canvas.
*Available for Southern California purchase only
